At a plenary session of Parliament on Monday, the Equitable Representation Bill was passed in first reading. Prior to that, at the start of the legislative house’s debate on establishing the need for passage, DPM and European Affairs Minister Sali said it was of historic significance because after 24 years, the principle of adequate and equitable representation from the Ohrid Framework Agreement was becoming a law for the first time.

According to him, the law allows equitable representation and meritocracy to go together, while there is also alignment with Venice Commission recommendations. However, fierce criticism came from ethnic Albanian MPs, who believe that the draft text represents a step backward in terms of exercising rights.
